PAIGE

BLACK AND gray shadows danced across my field of vision, and I woke up with a gasp.

It was only the sun shining through the window, the day after my birthday party debacle.

Pressure built in my temples at the mere thought of everything that went down last night. The medics carted Eric off on a stretcher. Then campus security interviewed me, asking question after question until I passed out on the couch. Someone carried me to my bed, but I couldn’t remember who. Everything was all jumbled up in my brain.

Sliding off the bed, I padded across the squeaky wood floor to the bathroom. Then I made a grave error in judgment. I glanced at myself in the mirror.

“Ack!” I screamed, turning on the water full-blast and reaching for the nearest towel.

Raccoon rings of black mascara were smudged into ghoulish shapes under my eyes, dripping black rivulets all the way down to my chin. The aftermath of a smoky eye combined with a hellish night.

Cupping my hands under the stream, I splashed cold water on my face and smeared cleanser all over. A girl couldn’t wait for hot water. This was an emergency.

After rinsing my face, I grabbed the baby oil and cotton balls to wipe away the sticky mascara remnants, then washed my face again.

This time when I looked in the mirror, only a fresh-faced me frowned back—her skin red and splotchy in spots. I dabbed on my essential moisturizer and waited for my face to go back to normal.

After a few minutes, the redness cleared. I finally untensed my shoulders.

“Sheesh. I’ll never go to bed without removing my makeup again. Ever.” I brushed the snarls out of my beyond-tangled locks.

Funny how the gesture made me wish I’d woken up on Eric’s chest like I had last night in the car. My heart lurched. Hopefully, he was okay.

Then my thoughts flew to Rocco. Shouldn’t I be worried about him too? He’d saved me from getting kidnapped last night, and I was beyond grateful. Was that the same thing Eric felt for me after I saved his life?

There was one thing I knew for sure, I never wanted to be a damsel in distress again.

Somehow, during my mental ramblings, I’d wrestled my hair into a messy topknot. Today was Sunday, after all, and I didn’t have anywhere I needed to be just yet. Except, I probably needed to visit Eric in the infirmary. And maybe thank Rocco in person. Or at least check in with my sister. But I just wanted to go back to bed and curl up with some Netflix.

Stella hovered in the doorway, her dark eyes glistening with tears. “So, you finally decided to wake up? I hope you’re feeling better.”

Her lips trembled. She stared at me like I’d just kicked her puppy.

I shuffled over and wrapped her in a hug. “I’m sorry you got stuck with me as a roommate. It seems I bring truckloads of drama wherever I go.” Tears welled in my eyes, too, and I sniffed to hold back the dam.
